Khichdi  is a very popular recipe prepared with rice, dal and some spices. It is not only filling and delicious but also very comforting. I usually prepare it with tur dal or moong dal or masoor dal or a combination of any of the mentioned two dals. When you do not have time to prepare any elaborate meals, but want something healthy, then Khichdi is a great option.. The brand India Khichdi promoted globally by the government as “India’s superfood”.


  • Rice  1 cup
  • Dal   1/2 cup Masoor Dal+ 1/2 Cup yellow mung dal )
  • Turmeric powder -1 1/2 tsp
  • Onion 1 medium chopped
  • Carrot 1 medium chopped
  • Cauliflower- few florets
  • Beans- 8-10 nos,
  • Tomato- 1 medium
  • Green Peas 1 Cup
  • Cumin seed  1 tea spoon
  • Bay leaf 1no.
  • Red chilli(Dry) – 2 nos.
  • Salt to taste
  • Water – 3-4 cups

For the seasoning 

  • Oil – 1 tbsp 
  • Red Chillies Powder  – 1 tsp 
  • Asafoetida(Hing) – 1/4 teaspoon

Cut all Vegetable into medium square pieces. Wash rice and dal together in water drain and keep aside.

Heat the Ghee  in a pressure cooker add cumin seeds, Bay leaf and Red chillies into it. When they splutter , add all the cut vegetables, Fry for a 3-4  minute and took out all vegetable and keep aside.

Now add  rices and Dal in the cooker with 4 cup of water and turmeric powder. Close the cooker and cook for  one whistle on high flame  and turn off after one whistle . Once the pressure subsides , open the cooker , mix all vegetable and salt gently.

Now for seasoning heat the one table spoon of ghee  , add Hing and Red chilli powder and turn off the flame to save the burning of Red chillies powder. Now Pour it over  the Khichdi .

Serve hot with Pickles, Papads, Flaxseeds Badi and Baigan Tomato  Aloo choka.

Note:- Mix additional water if required after cooling.
